Welcome!

Marhaban! My name is Sean and I am a senior at Central Michigan University, studying International Relations/Comparative Politics with an emphasis on the Middle East. I am about to embark on a semester in Amman, Jordan where I am excited to put my mediocre orienteering prowess and basic Arabic skills to work.

Detour

Didn't get lost today! However, I did go on a long detour….

What’s an adventure without exploring the unbeaten path? This path led me through a park that I didn’t read about in any literature on visiting Istanbul. It was amazing; it had one of the best views of the Bosphorous Sea on one side, and on the other side it ran right straight up to the15th century walls of the Topkapi Palace.

I should get lost (go on detours) more often.

Today I went through the TopkapiPalace, the Islamic Arts Museum, and the Underground Cistern. In all of these places I could finally get a real life interpretation on what I have studied in my college courses. I could not only relate the material to them, I could see where they happen, how they came about, and what they went through throughout history.

Today’s experience literally took me out of the text book and put me right where history happened.

I am writing this blog post while looking out over the grand Blue Mosque, the illuminating downtown, and the beautiful Bosphorus Sea. This panoramic view alone would put anyone speechless.

I could leave today, and be completely satisfied with this experience abroad; when I think I still have four months left… I’m ecstatic for what’s to come.
