Welcome!

Marhaban! My name is Sean and I am a senior at Central Michigan University, studying International Relations/Comparative Politics with an emphasis on the Middle East. I am about to embark on a semester in Amman, Jordan where I am excited to put my mediocre orienteering prowess and basic Arabic skills to work.

Here here!

I have arrived in Istanbul.

This time yesterday I was drinking American coffee in New York. Today, I am drinking Turkish tea, eating Turkish baklava, outside of the  Blue Mosque, while call to prayer is being projected throughout Istanbul. So begins the emersion to a very different and interesting culture.

I have spent most of today walking around Old Town, trying to get a feel for the city and culture. When I first left to explore this ancient part of Istanbul I became frustrated, probably because I got lost and most likely because I had to spend an hour explaining to a business owner why I didn’t want to buy a $1500 rug.  (Jetlag -1, Sean – 0).

Luckily, I found my hotel and from that point on it was a great day of wandering around this beautiful city. (Jetlag 1, Sean – 1).
